Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor is his most accomplished religious composition (his Requiem Mass remained even more fragmentary). The fullness of the choral parts and the beauty of the solo arias make it a masterpiece of classical religious music. Mozart wrote the Great Mass in Salzburg in 1783 as the result of a vow made to his father over his marriage with Constanze, who was seriously ill. He was able to draw on his recent study of the then almost forgotten works of Bach and Haendel, which influenced his contrapunctal writing for double chorus and the dramatic arias in the C minor Mass. Although unfinished, the Great Mass represents one of the pinnacles of Mozart’s art. It was also the last piece of religious music that he produced, except for the legendary final commission for the Requiem. Here Mozart comes close to the universal dimension of Bach’s B minor Mass, transcending the Rococo style of his other religious compositions in Salzburg and achieving a visionary, monumental breadth. A quartet of outstanding soloists will be accompanied by the full chorus of the Orchestre de Paris and the musicians of the Orchestre National d’Ile de France in a concert given by a total of over 130 performers.
